Attendees of the Intermediate Unit 1 Educational Campus at Colonial were taught a valuable lesson this past academic school year. They were taught to give back.

Students and teachers alike participated in two events with a common purpose: to contribute to the local community.

Students and teachers helped coordinate a blood drive held at the Colonial Campus that welcomed 19 donors. Colonial students baked cookies for donors to eat after giving blood, helped to set up the refreshments area, and assisted donors throughout the donation process. “Since we ask for donations for our students, we wanted to give back to the community to show our gratitude,” said Celeste Tiberi, paraeducator at the IU1 Colonial Campus.

Students in the Comprehensive Therapeutic Emotional Support Class at Colonial held a lemonade and cookie sale to raise money for an organization that they decided was most worthy. Their efforts raised over $200 for the Fayette Friends of Animals.

“Through their contributions, students learned how to work collaboratively and how to interact with the public,” said Tiberi.

As a reward for their contributions, students were taken to a Pittsburgh Pirates game. Seniors were treated to a senior banquet in which each student received a senior t-shirt, key chain, and $10 gift card. One student, nominated by Colonial Campus teachers, was awarded a $500 scholarship.
