A Paraprofessional I must be Highly Qualified as required by federal and state statutes. To be Highly Qualified, this person must hold an associate’s degree, have successfully completed 48 college credits, or passed the IU1 Highly Qualified local assessment.
This paraprofessional assists a certified teacher in the education of students including instructional assistance; classroom management; record keeping; assessments; progress monitoring; technology usage; and classroom safety, security, and organization. A Paraprofessional I provides assistance to students as they develop their skills, discover their abilities, and gain confidence in their competencies. This paraprofessional often accompanies a student to the regular education classroom so that he or she can receive instruction in core content areas in the least restrictive environment. A Paraprofessional I is responsible for carrying out the teacher’s directives while complying with state and federal laws, board policies, and the collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
