Intermediate Unit 1 is a non-profit regional educational service agency that serves the 25 school districts in Fayette, Greene, and Washington Counties. IU1 offers over 140 programs and services to school districts. It also serves as a bridge between the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) and local school districts.
During this year’s program, Executive Director Charles F. Mahoney presented IU1’s achievements and successes from the previous school year. He also recognized the 12 employees who were nominated for the Anne Sullivan Award. Sponsored by the Pennsylvania Association of Intermediate Units, the award recognizes special educators for facilitating acceptance of students with disabilities in schools and communities. The award is named after Helen Keller's teacher and is presented to the teacher and paraprofessional who are nominated by their peers in each participating intermediate unit.
Part of the morning session also consisted of general speaker Mrs. Carolyn Angelo, who is the Executive Director/Legal Counsel for Professional Standards and Practices Commission in Harrisburg. She spoke about “Educator Misconduct”. More information can be found on the Pennsylvania Department of Education website.
The afternoon session featured mandated Act 126 training, the Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting Act. On
